House of the Dragon’s Milly Alcock is the New Supergirl

In James Gunn and Peter Safran’s just-beginning DC Studios era, everything is new again. New Superman (David Corenswet), new Lois (Rachel Brosnahan), new Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult)—and now, unsurprisingly, new Supergirl. Sorry, Sasha Calle; you got to make history as the first Latina Supergirl in The Flash and that, apparently, is it.

Enter young Rhaenyra Targaryen. House of the Dragon star Milly Alcock, who appeared in the first half of the show’s first season (before a major time-jump) will play DC’s next Woman of Steel in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which is based on a comics run by Tom King and Bilquis Evely. When the project was announced, James Gun called this version of Supergirl “much more hardcore” than those we’ve seen before, saying:

“We see the difference between Superman, who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he’s an infant, versus Supergirl, who was raised on a rock chip off of Krypton, and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life.”

The movie will be written by Ana Nogueira, whose single prior writing credit is the short film “We Win” (she is also an actress, with roles on The Michael J. Fox Show and The Vampire Diaries). No director has been hired, and presumably James Gunn will be too busy with Superman: Legacy to also direct this one himself.

Variety notes that the timing of this announcement suggests that Supergirl may appear in the about-to-start-filming Superman: Legacy, which tracks, somehow, given that seemingly everyone is in it already.

Superman: Legacy comes out July 11, 2025. Supergirl does not yet have a release date. icon-paragraph-end
